A Name Synonymous with Trade Gotland is an island in the Baltic Sea that forms one of Sweden's smallest provinces.  Yet Gotland has played a decisive role in the nature of trade throughout the region, and is recongnized for its highly influential effects on the mercantile industry of Northern Europe. In the era of the Vikings, Visby, the capital of Gotland, became the center of trade in the Baltic Sea.  The Gotlanders concentrated on trading to the East, exchanging goods with the people of what is now Russia.  The word Russia, in fact, is very likely derived from "Ruser", a name by which these Swedish Vikings were known. In the 13th century, Gotland became home to one of the most powerful Hansas of the Hanseatic league.  Hansas were companies of European merchants trading with foreign lands.  Ultimately, the individual Hansas united to form a league, securing exclusive trading rights and privileges for all their members.  The Gotland Hansa was extremely successful and its merchants grew wealthy trading goods throughout Europe.
